Is It Serious Having A Lump At The Base Of The Neck Which Is Not Painful?

Hi Dr Mintz, I had a creek in my neck and when applying a lot of pressure with my fingers to work out the creek I noticed a pea like lump at base of my neck above the collar bone on the left hand side. It is about 1cm in diameter and is not sore at all. It is not on my skin and I would not have noticed it if I didn’t apply a bit of pressure. It kind of feels like it could be beside a vein. I am a little worried that it might be something serious so any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Thanks for your query.
Lump at the base of the neck can be a lymph node as neck has the largest number of superficial lymph nodes that can cause panic to the person. Most of the times they do not mean anything.
You need to self monitor the swelling for any increase in size, redness, pain, change in consistency from soft to hard, its fixation to the deeper structures, associated fever, any discharge, etc.
If any of the detrimental changes appear then it needs to be examined by your physician for proper diagnosis.
For the confirmation of diagnosis, you need to get a FNAB (fine needle aspiration biopsy) done.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
