Is It True That 24 Hours Of Resting Period Should Be Given After Recovery From Fever?

I have been diagnosed with the flu. They told me that I can t go back to work until Monday. Early this morning I no longer had a fever and I had not started Tamiflu until many hours after that. According to what I read on the CDC website it says I should stay home until 24hours after the fever is gone. Is this true? If so assuming I have no fever by tomorrow morning can I go back to work tomorrow?

Hello XXXX,

Thank you for posting your question here.
Your information is correct- CDC recommends that people with influenza-like illness should remain at home at least 24 hours after they are free of fever or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications.

Depending on your work place, sometimes may apply more stringent guidelines for example until complete resolution of all symptoms – may be considered for people who need to return to a place where high numbers of high-risk people may be exposed.

Meanwhile, if you decide to go back to work, keep in mind that some people with influenza will not have a fever, it is important that you cover your cough and wash hands often, and avoid close contact with people they know to be at increased risk of influenza.

Hope this helps,
Take care,
Dr. Klarida
