Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Knee Pain After Cycling A Suggestive Of Iliotibial Band Syndrome?
I m 33, 165lbs, 5 -10 endurance cyclist and is trying to get into long distance running. But after 8-10 miles I start having knee pain. After some googling I found it is called IT band syndrome. Stretching and strenthening helps but still I m not able to go beyong 16 miles without pain. Doctors say because of my bow shaped legs running is not a suitable sport for me. I refuse to accept this. I know my legs are extremely tight especially towards the outsides and hamstring. Could this be the reason for my bowed legs and recurring IT band ? Please help. Thank you.
You'd need an exam but we can give general information. 16 miles is a lot. Running on cement, personally, I've never NOT had pain after mile 12. Bow shaped legs are often due to a bone mineral disease that needs to be worked out: low vitamin D, loss of phosphorus or calcium, poor diet are some of several possible diseases of bone. The location of the pain and what motions hurt localizes the pain. It can be a tendon if it is bone attachments but not inside the joint.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
