Is Pacemaker Insertion Safe In An Elderly Patient?

My father has been recommended for a pace maker. He is 89 year old. I am concerned about the surgical risks outweighing the benefits of the pace maker. Is it unusually to get a pacemaker at 89? What other questions should I be asking the cardiologiststo ease my concerns.
