Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Persistent Dry Cough Due To Amalgam Filling In Teeth?
In the year 2008 I had my 4 lower front teeth fitted with amalgam filings. A month latter I started getting itching dry cough. My ENT dr. told me that it is some sort of an allergy. I was treated with heavy doses of anti-biotics and steriods for almost 5 years with no relief atall. In 2005 I finally visited a chest specialist who diagonised it as hypersensitive pneumonitis with no relief at all. Now, with the dry cough I started getting breathlessness. Doctors have given up hope and told me that I have to suffer this for the rest of my life. Please let me know if this sickness has developed due to the amalgam filling which has a heavy metallic mercury. Please advice
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query. As far as the hypersensitivitypneumonitis is concerned, it cannot be because of the amalgam restoration. If you have a doubt, get an allergic test done. If the test confirms that you are allergic to silver amalgam restoration, then get the fillings replaced with composite material. I hope i have answered your query. Take care.
