Is Sharp Pain In Chest A Matter Of Concern?

I woke up last night with a sharp pain in my chest when I would take a deep breath. It would hurt a little as I tried to roll over onto my side, I was on my back. Once on my side the pain left. This has happened before. Is this anything serious? Thank you.

Hello,

Feeling of chest pain while lying on the back, intensifies with deep breathing and relieved when rolled on the side indicates presence of GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease. It indicates that the acid in your stomach is gurgitating back into your food pipe causing severe pain. Cardiac pain do not increase or decrease in intensity with coughing or change in position. So you should not worry about heart attack.

To relieve GERD, you should do some life style changes. Avoid food with acids like tomatoes, chilies, onion, citrus fruits, lemon etc. Do not sleep right after meals. Instead keep a gap of at least 2 hours between dinner and bedtime. In addition, you can start using Digene syrup (Magnesium hydroxide + Carboxymethycellulose + Almuminium hydroxide) 10 ml (2 tablespoonfuls) 2-3 times a day especially after meals and before bedtime. Exercise regularly and drink lots of water. You can raise your upper part of bed from chest to head to prevent regurgitation. However, only elevating head will not help.

If these changes do not give you any relief, you should contact a gastroenterologist for physical examination and further investigations for treatment with medicines.

I hope this answer helps you. Thank you for trusting HCM. I will welcome your follow up questions.
