Is Shingles Contagious?

I have a rash on my leg and the closest I could find on the computer is shingles .. I have an appointment next week with my doctor and will find out for sure. My questions is - are they contagious to anyone else or can I spread them on myself without knowing??

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Can you send me a picture of the lesion? Any itching, pain or fever? Did you have history of chickenpox in the past? Shingles present as itchy and painful blisters in a person who had chickenpox in the past. Yes, it is contagious to others in the blister phase. Those who never had chickenpox before can get it from this. If you are sure of diagnosis, isolation is recommended.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
