Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 52 years old and was recently prescribed Topamax for facial pain and migraines and am currently taking 50mg. I looked up dangerous drug interactions and oral contraceptives was listed. I am currently taking oral contraceptives as hormone replacement. What are the dangers? Also, another important question, I suffer from sinus issues and allergies but since I started taking Topamax 4 weeks ago, I ve noticed a significant increase in my morning congestion and I also have excessive phlegm I the morning as well (worse then I ve ever experienced). Could this be a possible side effect? Thank You, JoAnne
Interaction is there but is not dangerous like life-threatening. Topamax is an enzyme inducer which enhances the metabolism of contraceptive pill medicine. So ultimately effects of hormone replacement therapy will decrease with the regular dose you are taking. You just have to increase the dose of contraceptive pills after consulting with gynaecologist you are consulting.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
