Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My wife is 28 years old and was just diagnosed with disc protusion. the dr is recommending a spinal fusion - he is recommending this because he feels that someone her age that has this might have it due to genetics and that would indicate therapy might not be the cure. - i am scared the surgery might make it worse - can someone help me with the philosophy on recommending surgery, and how age plays into it? it seems like there are many alternatives that may be just as good as spinal fusion. The dr that is recommending it patented the cage he is using and appears to be very respected, but i am still nervous.
Most likely your wife has a degenerative condition that lead to a protrusion of disc at a younger age. Spinal fusion surgery will certainly help her in reducing pain, correction of disability if any and improvement in neurological function. You can take a second opinion from another spine surgeon if you have a doubt. Please don't worry about the surgery as it's recommended in younger patients and is almost free from complications.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
