Is Surgery Needed For The Following MRI Scan Result?
I had an MRI which showed: at l5/S1 reduced disc height and signal associated with a moderately large right para central posterior disc protrusion which compresses the thecal sac and impinges on the right S 1 nerve root sheath which is displaced posteriorly by the disc protrusion. There is some hypertrophic facet joint degeneration combined with some reduced disc height results in some moderate L 5 foraminal narrowing. Surgery has been suggested: a) lumbar discectomy b) Anterior lumbar inter body fusion Any comments? Thanks joset
Hi Thanks for posting on HCM Sorry to here what you are going through. That can in short be termed a degenerative disk disease.Surgery might be the best option but i will say the management of this condition is multidisciplinary. You may have the consent of a Rheumatologist and Neurosurgeon for other treatment options like pain medications, myorelaxants, steroids occasionally and physiotherapy. The options to be chosen will however be determined by your clinical presentation. If any functional impotence, or unbearable pain, surgery can not be substituted. Hope my answer will help you Best regards
