Is Surgery Needed To Stop The Incontinence After A Car Accident?

Hello Dr. Siegel, I was in a car accident last year on July 1st(rear-ended by a van) and I suffered a whiplash. I was sent for Physiotherapy and after 6 weeks of Physio., I developed excruciating pain and was Xrayed and found to have a fracture in the L3 disc. Two days later, I developed urine leaks and was taken to hospital for surgery. The Emergency physician decided against surgery, after a CT scan, as he said that there is only a chip in the disc and it is appearing to heal. My incontinence has not stopped yet. I have had kidney/bladder ultrasound and everything is clear. I ve also had an MRI 12 weeks after my injury and it showed bulge in the L3, 4,5 disc. My urine leak is very mild, oozing out without my knowledge, but it has not stopped. My physician thinks that I might need surgery of the spine to correct this. Is surgery needed to stop the Incontinence? I ve never had Incontinence before. I m a 46 year old woman and have not had children either. At one point, the ER physician thought this was a gynaecological issue, but he didn t know that I ve never given birth.

Hi Lady,

Thanks for your query.

The urinary incontinence is apparently due to compression (by bulging discs) or injury to the nerves supplying the bladder sphincter. Since the problem is persisting, surgical decompression of the nerves is the logical treatment.

Hence, spinal surgery is required to remove the bulging discs. In the meanwhile- pending surgery-, you may try Oxybutynin tablets which, in appropriate doses, should relieve incontinence.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me and will prescribe the advised drugs in appropriate doses.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
