Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi Doc,I m from Philippines. I have a boyfriend with chronic hepatitis B,he is 24 years old.His sgpt/alt is 48v. His doctor prescribed him to take revovir clevudine 30mg once a day, Im so afraid because I ve done a research about this med & it says that it was already banned from other country because of serious side effects. He started taking this medicine yesterday. I would like to ask if its still safe & effective to take? What is your recommendation? Thank you.
Thanks for asking at Healthcare Magic. I read your question and I understand your concern. Yes Clevudine is not the first line drug in chronic Hepatitis B. it has side effects like myopathies. it's only approved in south Korea and your country. According to new guidelines tenofovir or entecavir are first line and effective drugs with much less side effects. Chronic hepatitis should be treated only if male ALT (SGPT) is more than 90 and PCR detect up to 2000 in HBe negative and 20000 in HBe positive. or PCR is detected as mentioned plus liver biopsy shows scarring, fibrosis or inflammation. Hope it helps best. Don't forget to rate this answer and close the discussion at Healthcare Magic. Take your best care. Regards Dr Ejaz
