Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello! I m curious to know the best way to introduce L-Tryptophan for sleep aid after having taken over the counter sleep aids for an extended period of time. I was told the best way is to stop taking the other products for at least a week before beginning Tryptophan. Is that correct?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. Tryptophan is is an essential amino acid that helps the body make proteins and certain brain-signaling chemicals. Tryptophan increases serotonin and melatonin, both which are neuro-transmitters in brain’s pineal gland. It is known to interact with those brain chemicals important to sleep and the timing of your biological clock’s sleep-wake cycle. When either serotonin or melatonin levels are is disrupted, one may suffer from insomnia (sleeplessness) and depression symptoms. Hence, L-tryptophan is an all-natural dietary supplement commonly used to counter insomnia as well as depression. As a home remedy, you can drink warm milk as a remedy for insomnia, as tryptophan present in milk can make you drowsy and help to get good sleep. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
