Is Tetanus Injection Needed For A Wound On Palm Caused By A Screw Driver?

My 70 year old grandmother has got hurt in the palm from a screw driver. The wound is around 4-5 mm deep.
Is tetanus injection required?[the screw driver was quite old, though did not have any rust]
The name of tetanus injection and the quantity of medicine to be administered?

Hello and welcome to HCM. I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

How you describe the wound and the screw driver, it looks like it is a contaminated wound and a puncture wound, so prophylaxis is needed).

If your grandmother did complete a primary tetanus diphteria series and themost recent dose was within the past five years, vaccine is not needed (the next dose is at 10 year interval after last dose).

If you don't know or your grandmother didn't complete primary series then she should administer vaccine and tetanus immune globulin (TIG). TIG dose is 250 U IM and should be given simultaneously with the tetanus-containing vaccine.
