Is The Back And Hip Pain Normal With Spina Bifida Occult?
Hi, my names Aimee, I was diagnosed with fibermyalga, now I read a recent x-ray and it says spina bifida occult a s1. I kinda knew that I didn't have fibermyalga Because the pain is always in my back and hips. Is bad back and hip pain normal with sbo?, and learning disabilities? And mood disorders? Is all that normal with sbo?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Spinal bifida is a congenital condition in which the posterior parts of some of the vertebrae do not close completely. There are various types of spina bifida depending on the degree of non-closure of the vertebrae. When the defect is large enough the spinal cord can protrude from the gap. Spina bifida occulta is a condition in which the gap is very small and it does not allow the spinal cord to protrude. It is asymptomatic in majority of cases however, it can be associated with back pain not responding to conventional treatment for back ache. Surgical closure of the defect is possible however, the functional abnormalities (if present) cannot be corrected. However, functional abnormalities are rare with spina bifida occulta.
