Is The Spine Breaking Surgery Recommended To Treat Scoliosis?

Greetings: I need you opinion on this: My 22 yr. old daughter had severe scoliosis when she was 12, had surgery. Just found out the harrington rods broke along with the hardware, her spine is back to the "S" (backwards) curve at 50%. A specialists in Chicago said he would have to break her spine in order to straighten the spine out and there is a chance of becoming a quadapelegic. Is this something that is done: breaking the back? We are frightened and all I do is cry.
