Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is There A Possibility For A Heart Attack If Having High Cholesterol?
My doctor had me do a non-fasting chlorestoral test and the results were in the 500's he said. He said my "bad" chlorestoral was so high it was off the charts and my "good" chlorestoral was so low that it too was off the charts. He did not put me on any medication but rather told me to change my diet first to see what happens. I was floored by the results and asked him if we should do a fasting test. He responded no, that in his opinion, fasting tests are not helpful. Any advice? I'm concerned that I'm a heart attack waiting to happen. BTW, I am a 56-year-old female with a family history of high chlorestoral and heart disease.
Hi. Welcome to HCM. I understand your worry and dont get scared with this reports. Your doctor is right and bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) should not be too high. Most of the doctors prefer dietary modifications first and then if not controlled will put on medications. High levels of bad cholesterol alone may not be the risk factor for heart disease. High BP, obesity, sedentary life style are also some of the other risk factors. I advice u to follow your doctor instructions and strictly follow his advice on diet, he might suggest one more lipid profile after a month, if your bad cholesterol still remains high u will be put on lipid lowering medications. Do remember your dietary modifications will still continue even after starting medications. Regards.
