Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was diagnosed with acute tonsillitis at an urgent care center and developed bad hives symetrically and joint pain. I went to ER for treatment of the allergic reaction to clindamycin and they started an IV and want to give me a precription for penicillin to treat the tonsillitis. Is that safe replacement antibiotic, given my new hypersensitivity to clindamycin?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..
As per your complain Clindamycin belongs to a group of Lincosamide antibiotics while Penicillin nelomgs to Penicillin group.. Therefore as they are different groups of antibiotics hypersensitivity to one group will not necessarily cause hypersensitivity to other group of antibiotics too.. Therefore if you are allergic to Clindamycin yu can take Penicillin but in case if you are worried about the side effects you can get a precautionary allergic test done for confirmation and take the antibiotic accordingly. As of now you can keep doing warm saline gargles, steam inhalation and take Ibuprofen to relieve throat pain.. Suck throat lozenges and sip on warm water..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
