Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my mom has high cholesterol , and uses some special butter to lower it? She uses some stuff called Promise Active butter. Her nutritionist says that she should eat 2tbsp a day to lower her cholesterol. The only thing is that i think 2 tbsp is a lot. Thats A LOT more butter than if she was just using regular old fashion butter. My family and I are concerned that having 2 tbsp of this is not good, even though her nutritionist and the company says it is good for her. Heres a little background on my mom. She has high cholesterol, she gets dizzy, shes weak some times, and she has been like this for the last year or so. basically im wondering if this butter is even good for her. Especially since she is using a large amount of it a day.
Hi,
Most of these products contain something called plant sterols. This is something which can block cholesterol from being absorbed in the intestine so that it can pass through the body. You need to eat a certain amount of the product for it to have any real benefit so I am not doubting that the nutritionist may have recommended that amount. You should ask the nutritionist if you have concerns. However, these products are only a minor help in an overall serious condition. The products are like using an umbrella in a hurricaine-- it's not a bad idea but it's not enough.
She really needs cholesterol medication like Lipitor. She should also have her arteries (in her heart and in her neck) evaluated for blockages. The symptoms sound to me like she has a blockage. My mother has high cholesterol and had a massive heart attack 2 years ago because she had 3 blockages. She is doing well now but her heart has permanent damage from the heart attack so if you can prevent a heart attack (or stroke) before it happens then she will be much better off.
Good luck.
