Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Weaning Off Clozaril After Using For 25 Yrs Due To High Blood Count A Good Idea?
I have Bipolar Disorder and have been taking Clozaril for over 25 years. Today I was told that my blood count was too high (13,000) and my doctor wants me to go off of the clozaril. He says it is protocol, but I am afraid of becoming psychotic because he wants me off the drug for a month. Is there another drug I can use to take its place? My husband wants to know what to do If become psychotic.
It is not uncommon for long-term use of Clozaril to cause an increase in white blood cell count. If your doctor has recommended stopping the medication, it is important to follow their advice. Abruptly stopping Clozaril can lead to withdrawal symptoms, so it is important to gradually wean off the medication under the guidance of your doctor.
Your doctor may suggest an alternative medication to manage your symptoms during this transition period. It is important to have a plan in place for managing any potential psychotic symptoms, such as working with your doctor to have a crisis plan or having support from family or mental health professionals.
It is important to communicate your concerns with your doctor and ask any questions you may have about the process. They can provide more information about why they are recommending this course of action and what steps can be taken to minimize any potential risks.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
