Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Withdrawal From Xanax Advisable At An Elderly Age?
I have been on Xanax for over 20 years and took .5 mg 4 x s a day. My new physician wants me off of it. I titrated down to .5 mg 3 x s a day. I am 61 years old and am concerned of any physical problems or emotional problems this may cause me. I was prescribed Xanax for panic/anxiety disorder.
Xanax is alprazolam , benzodiazepene used for anxiety and other mental conditions. As it is a Central nervous system depressant and there is a tendency to get addicted to it , your doctor is trying to take you off it .
However, sudden stoppage is not good and the dose should be taperred and gradually stopped.
If the dose is tappered slowly you will not have any physical or emotional problems.
However, if there are any symptoms of mood swings and depression or insomnia kindly inform your doctor.
Thanks
