Itching From Large Number Of Bug Bites. Strong Reaction, Difficulty To Be Awake After Rubbing Sleep Aid Diphenycramine. Concerning?
Hello. A friend of mine had a large number of bug bites, and was itching badly. We did not have any anti-itch cream, so I busted open between 5 to 8 50mg generic nighttime sleep aid gelcaps (diphenydramine HCl) and rubbed the liquid on her bites. Diphen usually makes her exceptionally tired, but she seems to be reacting more strongly than usual, having a very difficult time staying awake. Is there anything we should be concerned about in this situation, in the realm of overdosage?

The absorption from the skin of these diphenhydramine capsules is not well documented.I do not think so 5-8 capsules can have any effect on the overdose part in a big way.
These are quite safe medicines, 5-8 capsules specially if used in topical route should not be a problem.

From your I understood that you have misused Diphenhydramine gel caps.
Diphenhydramine gel caps are made for systemic use.
Usually people misuse Diphenhydramine itch stopping Gel by taking orally. But it is to be applied topically.
Probably it may not cause overdose, as you used for topical purpose.
Overdose also depends on age, weight, Health condition etc..
Usual overdose symptom of Diphenhydramine is Drowsiness, Confusion, Agitation, Low fever, stomach pain and rapid heart rate.
Some serious side effects are also reported like Seizures, Coma and delirium.
If your friend have any of the above serious side effects, move her to ER.
