Knee Bruised, Swollen, Painful After Falling. Chances Of Anything More Than Bruising?
I fell over on Friday the 21st of july and have still got a fairly painful bruise just below my right knee. Bruising occurred within 10 minutes of the fall, was slightly swollen and fairly large. the bruise has decreased in size a little bit, but it is still fairly painful. I was wondering if I should consult a doctor and see if it is anything more serious than just a simple bruise, or get some kind of treatment.
If you are able to walk normally, then a fracture in unlikely.
I feel that you could have suffered a soft tissuehematoma. This will resolve spontaneously with the following measures -
* Rest to the injured part and don’t involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues. * Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours. * Use elastic compression bandage around the swollen area * Elevation of the limb * Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications
Hi there, thanxs for putting up the question on healthcaremagic.
Firstly, please take an anti-tetanus prophylaxis asap
According to your description,it seems it could be more than a simple bruise due to fall. my advice to you would be-
-apply ice packs to the injured area. -take any anti-inflammatory medicine and analgesic ie ibruphen for pain. -avoid any crepe bandage. -avoid weigt bearing on that leg completely. -please visit the doc asap,if the symptoms persists, you to get an x-ray done,to rule out any fracture.
Hope it helped.
Regards, Dr neha.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for posting your query.
It might be soft tissue injury or fracture. Without X-ray, it is difficult to differentiate a fracture from others. I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.
In the interim, take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid putting weight and rest well.
Wishing you good health... Regards.
