Knee Injury, Black Scab, Tenderness. Should Scab Be Removed?
My 89 year old mother had injured her knee ( tibia spinal fracture ) about 12 weeks ago which created a lot of bleeding up and down her leg. Her knee is doing much better now but she has developed a sore on her ankle from the blood not circulating properly. It has turned into a black scab now with a lot of tenderness. She was seen today by wound care specialists and they recommended to debris the scab off so the healthy skin can grow underneath. Is this a good idea considering her age? I am concerned this new open sore will take even longer to heal. Since we did not want this treatment , they sent her home with some gel to put on it and wrapped the ankle and will see her back in 2 days.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for writing to us It is recommended to debride the black and dead area so tat healthy tissue can be regenerated. Do not so much worry about the age and healing. If dead and black portion removed, healing will be faster. So I suggest yo to go with your doctor. I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
