Knee Injury, Bruised And Swollen, Popped, Pulsating Sensation. What Does This Mean?

My 12 year old son Mason played his last soccer game last night. He was goalie and threw himself down ontop of the ball to get it from going into the goal box. A team member from the opposite team actually stepped on his left knee as he went down. (they do wear cleats) Mason did not get up on his own. The coach and ref assisted him up and to the benches. After a while he begged to go back into the game. He tried to play on but I could see he was limping. His knee is scratched up and brusing. It is a bit swollen on the inside of the knee compared to the right knee. I gave him motrin and iced it as we propped it up. When I woke him up for school this morning it looks the same and he is still limping. He said he can feel the blood in his knee area so I assume he means like a pulsating feeling. I am not sure to continue ice and propping it up at home or to take him to the urgent care center here in town.
