Knee Pain, Soreness, Worse In Cold. Chondromalacia Patellae. Help?

Hi, I went to the doc about 2 years ago with knee pain and was told it was chondromalacia patellae. I m 24 and female, apparently it s common. Recently my knees have been much worse - sometimes stiff, sometimes extremely sore, worse in cold etc. I ve also noticed a small, pea-sized lump under the skin on my left knee which appears to be bony and attached to the knee cap. Any ideas?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
Chondromalacia is due to changes of the deepest layers of cartilage, causing blistering of the surface cartilage.
Treatment of patellofemoral pain often begins with simple measures. Rest your knee as much as possible. Avoid any activities that increase the pain, such as climbing stairs.
If needed, take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB)
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
