Late Period, Had Unprotected Sex. Will Having MRI Done Cause Harm To Fetus If Pregnant?

I was late for my period, and I meet most of the symptoms of early pregnancy. I had unprotected sex 3 weeks ago. As I have a knee promblem, am going to gave an MRI today, and I heard that if indeed am pregnant and I have an MRI, there is a big danger that am not going to be able to stay pregnant again. Is this true? What are the complications involved? I cannot prospone the MRI scan

Hello and thanks for your query!

Although there is no definite evidence showing ill effects of MR scanning to the developing fetus, it is considered a good practice to avoid MR during the first trimester of pregnancy. This is due to the possible effects of heating and electromagnetic fields on the fetus (there is no radiation involved). The use of MR contrast materials (gadolinium) is contra-indicated during pregnancy.
Therefore, if your scan is not related to a serious or urgent condition, it is probably not to take it during your first trimester.
There is no known risk for future pregnancy.

Hope this helps,

I wish you Good Health!
