Left Ultra Tampax Tampon Inside, Terrible Cramping And Cervical Pain. Chances Of Toxic Shock Syndrome ?

I left an ultra tampax tampon in from 5:30 this morning until 2:30 this afternoon. I just started my period, but didn't have any other size tampons. It was probably more than I needed. Also, I forgot to bring any other tampons, so I just left that one in all day. Around 2:30 I started having terrible cramping and cervical pain. I immediately removed my tampon. I took four ibuprofren an hour and a half ago and am finally feeling some relief. I still am cramping, but for the most part it is tolerable. I also have chills and am achy. What are my chances of having Toxic Shock Syndrome?

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about the symptom you have experienced as a result of this tampon. Tampon use is a risk factor for TSS but it does not mean that its use would lead to this. Also, the longer it stays, the higher the chances but it is not also a guarantee. It is only when it gets contaminated by the germ staphylococcus that this becomes a possibility. It is good to be on the watch but unless it happens, we cannot say you would or you would not. I think you are doing the right things and you should continue so to make sure all eventualities are managed correctly. Be calm and know that this is not as common as some have made it to sound.

I hope you find this helpful. Thank you so much for using our services and please do feel free to ask for more information if need be. I wish you the best of health.
