Lost Big Toe Nail Due To Blood Clot, New Nail Seems Detached From The Skin Underneath, Gives Off Foul Smell When Wet. Medications?

Hi Doctor, I ve lost my big toe nail because of blood clot. Wearing a shoe size less than my size has caused this. After clotting, slowing the nail has come off and a new nail has grown. However, the new nail is detatched from the skin underneath. I can feel there is a clot or may be bit of the old nail left underneath the new nail. Also, when it gets wet, it smells bad. Could you please suggest medication for the same. Thank you!

Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to Healthcare Magic.

After reading your query it appears the possibility of "Mixed infection of toe nail".

It is quite common to find mixed kind of infections at toe nail. Most commonly the toe nail is inhabited by the fungus super-added by bacterias. All these microorganism are prone to cause infection at the local site.

As your toe nail is already been damaged with blood clot in it so is the medium for the growth of these organisms causing infection and so bad odor.

For the betterment kindly follow the suggestions below:
-You can do warm water compresses two time a day for 5 minutes each time.
-Apply Gentian violet paint 3-4 times a day.
-Do not try to pinch or press the area as it can lead to further aggravation.
-you can take a course of antibiotic and anti-fungal tablet under medical advice.

Despite above measures if the problem is not getting better then it is better to consult a dermatologist for best guidance.

Hope these information will help.
