Hi there,
Thanks for your query.
Excessive gas formation and
flatulence occurs when gas collects inside the digestive system.
Gas collects in two main ways:-
• Swallowing air (mainly
oxygen and nitrogen) during eating or drinking, which collect in the digestive tract.
• As the food is digested, digestive gases such as hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide collect.
*** Possible causes of excessive gas formation and flatulence :-
* Excess swallowing of air as in chewing gum,
smoking, carbonated drinks, and eating too quickly.
* Foods that cannot be absorbed or take a long time to digest. The colon contains a large number of bacteria that then break down the food, releasing gases as they do so.
* Temporary conditions, such as
constipation and
gastroenteritis,
*
Lactose intolerance such as intolerance to milk and dairy products.
* Intolerance to wheat, barley and its products.
* Digestive problems, such as
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Home-Treatment
* Eat slowly and chew well.
* Avoid chewing gum and smoking
* Exclude difficult-to-digest carbohydrates from your diet. replace these with carbohydrates that are easier to digest, such as potatoes, rice, and bananas.
* Exclude high-gas forming foods such as as beans, cabbage, broccoli, raisins, lentils, prunes, and apples; aerated drinks.
* Eat around six small meals a day instead of three larger ones.
* Avoid foods, such as, beans, cabbage, broccoli, raisins, lentils, apples and fruit juices.
