Low Blood Pressure, High RBC And Black Stool. What Does It Mean? Ruptured Spleen?

What does a high rbc , and low blood pressure and black stool indicate, other than internal bleeding? My grandfather is being transported via ambulance to the hospital. If his levels get to high then the spleen will need to be taken or possible rupture, correct? My concern is that his organs are shutting down. He is still coherent; however I live out of state, and wondering if I should make travel arrangements? Thanks,

Hi and thanks for the query,
Low blood pressure, high RBC and blood stools could indicate lots of thinks. The commonest cuse of black stools in the elderly, and especially associated to low blood pressure should gastrointestinal bleeding. This is the first thing that has to be evaluated on examination and raising his blood pressure either through colloids or blood transfusions depending on the intensity and the case.
General cause of high red blood cells is what is called Vaquez s disease which is usually associated with a large spleen. Removal of the spleen usually helps.
I suggest you go to be by him, especially during the early days if you really can.
