Lump Under Knee Cap, Painful To Move Leg, Movable Lump. Solution?
I have a lump under my knee cap it resurfaces every now an then sometimes quiet often, when it s on top of my knee cap i can move it all around but its extremly painfull to move my leg until the lump is pushed back under my knee cap, it doesn t hurt on a day to say basis, has no effect on my leg or knee once it s under my knee cap, just wondering if anyone could help me understand what this could be and if there is a solution? Thanks :) x
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The lump you have noticed is likely to be due to inflammation of the bursae around the knee. The pain in the swelling is suggestive of its inflammatory nature. An MRI scan of the joint will help in exact diagnosis.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Well, without a clinical evaluation it would be difficult to determine the cause of the lump. Possibilities that may need to be considered include enlarged bursa, lipomas, cysts, growths from underlying connective tissue etc.
Sometimes, a fluid filled structure just above the knee cap called supra patellar bursa is chronically inflamed, with or without pain, due to some infection or trauma and the process causes fibrosis and inflammation, making a lump like structure above the knee cap.
I would suggest getting this evaluated by an orthopedician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. You may get the X-ray of the area affected and FNAC (fine needle aspiration cytology) of lump under his/her guidance.
Wishing you good health...
Regards.
Dr Saurabh Gupta.
