I was curious, when I was a child I had lumps in the back of my knees, my mother indicated that they would not remove the cause they could grow back!?!? they went away on their own I guess and now I m 30 and I have a lump behind my right knee I have numbness and tingling in my right foot and also calf pain, it hurts to walk up and down steps it hurts more when I bend my knee not as much to extend it!! Any ideas???!!

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The lump behind the knee that is persistent for years can be a soft tissue swelling like a lipoma or a synovial cyst. Since there is numbness and tingling present, it is indicative of a nerve compression or irritation. Surgical removal of the lump may be needed.
