MRI Confirmed A Broken Chip In The Knee. Is Surgery Necessary?
Hi,
I am told by my doctor that I might have a broken chip in my left knee and to confirm the same he's suggested a MRI scan for my knee. If it were confirmed to be a broken chip then is surgery absolutely necessary ? At present I don't hv any pain during normal activities, however it pains mainly during high impact sports such as squash etc.
Hello, MRI scan is basically meant to detect any soft tissue problem in the knee. Your doctor might have suspected a tear in the meniscus of your knee joint and might have suggested MRI, which is absolutely right. Not all tears in the meniscus needs surgical intervention, they can be managed conservatively also. But, as you are involved in high impact sports, there is every possibility that your knee pain will get worse as the time progresses and you may get recurrent effusions ( swelling) of the knee also. Though you are not having any pain during routine activities, it better to get MRI done just to exclude any major issues inside your knee joint. Hope its clear now. Good luck
