Marfins Syndrome, Genetically Transferable, Serious Disease ?

I was wondering, is Marfins syndrome deadly? What if it s diagnosed, but not treated? And would marfins syndrome be passed on to the child if the father has it, but not the mother?

Thank you for your question.

Marfans syndrome is an inherited disorder that has the chances of 50% of transmission to a child of an affected parent (whether it is the father or the mother affected).

It is a connective tissue disorder i.e. a disorder that affects those fibers of the body that bind different organs or structures in the body.
So, it can affect the eyes, skeleton tissue, blood vessels and heart among other organ tissues.

Due to it affecting the large blood vessels and the heart, it can be very dangerous and can cause death if the complication is not recognized on time. It is important that the person affected should be followed by a cardiologist closely and regularly at frequent intervals so if it has affected the large blood vessel or the heart, it is recognized on time and intervention done in time.

At the same time, the person should also have frequent eye examinations by an ophthalmologist as well as seen by a geneticist.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
