Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mom had an collasped lung in 2000. Today a doctor from Patient First called her to give her the response of an xray done monday. They found a mass on the right lung. Anyway these two instances tie together?? She has a test done tomorrow. I just want a honest idea of what this can be?
Collapse of the lung is due to the mass. the mass obstructs the airway so that the part beyond the obstruction collapses.
Causes could be various. It could be an ordinary tumor like harmartoma which could be left alone or it could be carcinoma especially if she was a long time smoker, which is serious cancer and might need surgery. It could be lung abscess if she had low grade fever and weight loss. Hope for the best and hope it's benign.
I would say that her risk will be very low if she wasn't a smoker. But still there is a type of cancer that comes in non smokers which still needs to be ruled out. A biopsy will clear the issue and could help you with some sleep as well.
