Medicine To Cure Elephantiasis
hi my elder some 9-10 months back met with an accident and he was plastered for two months but the swelling was there till date we thought it is because of fracture . but now we come to know that he was infected with elephatisis. doctor said that there is not medicine to cure this disease and it is due to bite of mosquito. pls reply what should we do now.

Elephantiasis is caused by infection of Wuchereria bancrofti carried by mosquitoes. It blocks lymphatics and cause heavy swelling. The drug of choice in treating Elephantiasis is diethylcarbamazine (Hetrazan) .Taken 2 mg/kg per day 3 times a day for 3 weeks. Another drug which can be used is Ivermectin. Both these drugs have successfully killed worms and considerably reduced swollen lymph nodes.

The disease activity can easily be eliminated by anti-helminthic therapy / assisted by symptomatic treatment.
The residual swelling is due to proliferation of lymphatics and will not improve.
Plastic surgery may be tried and helps in some.
