Must The Esophagus Be Tested When Diagnosed With Acid Reflux?

I am a 42 y/o female, 5'4", 230 lbs, no chronic illnesses, gallbladder removed 3 yrs ago. I was diagnosed 2 days ago w/acid reflux & given Nexium. Can I ask my PCM to actually examine my esophagus? She didn't do that at my visit, and I would like to have someone examine my esophagus. Can I make that request?

Hi, thanks for your query.
Yes you can request the doctor to do an upper gi endoscopy and test the oesophagus.
But since you are having symptoms of acid reflux from 2 days, endoscopy is not needed.
It is easily treated with proton pump inhibitors + prokinetcs drug for 3 to 6 weeks.
If symptoms persists, then you can get endoscopy done.
Avoid oily and spicy foods. Small and frequent feeds recommended. Hope my answers have helped you. Thanks.
