Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 83 year old father has been using a CPAP for the last 4-5 years. He is increasingly unable to tolerate using the CPAP and has been changed to a oxygen via nasal cannula at 4 liters. The doctor prescribed Theophylline 200 mg at night. Disrupted sleep is listed as a potential side effect of Theophylline and sure enough he is sleeping 3-4 hours at a time. I am wondering if it is safe to give him melatonin? The interaction checker says yes, but I have recently read a study about melatonin causing nocturnal asthma leading to respiratory depression. We have an appointment with his PCP in the next week and an upcoming sleep study using just the oxygen and Theophylline. We are awaiting a referral to a pulmonologist. Do you have any advice regarding this medication combo? Or do you have any suggestions regarding sleep aids for an older gentleman. He currently take Trazodone 50 mg. He was not able to tolerate Ambien due to disorientation and hallucinations. May Linn
