My Father-in-law Was Recently Prescribed A Liquid Iron Medication (ferrous

My father-in-law was recently prescribed a liquid iron medication (ferrous sulfate?) to raise the iron level in his blood. He is now saying that since being on the medication his stoll has turned a dark brown/black color. Is this a result of the medication or is there another source we need to be looking for. By the way, he is 98 yrs old.
