My Mother, (age 84), Is Currently Being Prescribed 2700 Milligrams

My mother, (age 84), is currently being prescribed 2700 milligrams of Gabapentin (Neurontin) daily. My father and I fear that this is too much for a woman that weighs less than 150 lbs. We've noticed a change in her and after doing some research concerning the side effects of this drug have determined that she has the following: dizziness, unsteadiness, lack of coordination, difficulty speaking, and a few others. She has diabetes and was prescribed this medication for nerve pain she was experiencing, but now if fear that she's getting way too much in her system which is adversely affecting her health. Is there another medication that she can be prescribed that will help with the nerve pain but not have all the side effects of Gabapentin? By the way, I don't live in the same state as my parents, both in their 80's. I'm at least 12 hours drive away from them, so I don't have the luxury of talking to her doctor.
