My Son Is 5-1/2 Year Old Who Was Diagnosed To

My son is 5-1/2 year old who was diagnosed to show mild autistic features from Imahns,Medical College ,Kozhikode at 2-1/2 year old age.He was given with speech therapy at CDS,Kozhikode and undergone Com-deal programme at calicut. He is showing lot of improvements as per our observation. Now his speech is improved and becoming meaningful to a great extent. His difficulties still exist in wearing dresses, writing, identifying colours ,eating with hands by himself.he used to mingle with other children now and used to attend nursery school.he is undergoing one hour training on two days in a week as pert of SSA. I would like to get an expert opinion on the mode of training to be adopted for further development in the weaker areas.I am interested to visit NIMHANS for the same.Kindly advise me the way for getting an appointment at NIMHANS.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi there ~

I understand your concerns for your son. I know that autism is a tough illness to deal with. ABA or applied behavioral analysis would be the best to give your child the therapy that he needs to lead a normal life. The trick is to find out how your child communicates. It is the failure to do so, that makes the life of the caregiver not worth and very hard at times. I also think that getting an appointment at NIMHANS is easy. You go to the CAP (child and adolescent psychiatry) OPD i.e. outpatient department which is in the campus, get yourself registered and get a screening done. Go with all your documents and you should be seeing a resident and subsequently a supervisor who is a CAP psychiatrist very briefly. An appointment is assigned to you if necessary (for either extensive therapy or evaluation) and advice given regarding medications and therapy. I hope this helps.

Take care and have a lovely day!
