Nausea, Occasional Cramps, IBS. Abnormal Urinary PH Level. Taking Motillium, Buscapan. Acupuncture?

Hi. My 14 yr old daughter has nausea each morning 0430hrs, after eating food and last thing at night for the last two weeks. Occasional cramps. She is pale all the time. Plays volleyball. Have taken her three times to on call Dr. They diagnosed IBS. She s been taking Motillium and buscapan for last two weeks with little effect. She took valloid for last two days with some effect. Her Gran has h-pylori. Her cousin and grandad passed away 6 weeks ago and she was very upset by that 4 weeks ago. Her urinary ph was 8.5 last week and sg 1.015. Otherwise normal multistix findings.
Am thinking of taking her down the alternative therapy line. Accupuncture namely.
Suggestions would be welcome.
Jane.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Jane and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

I respect your concern and will to try anything and everything to find a cure/solution for your daughter. It is your love that makes you do this, it is my duty to try to help you in achieving this. But, before going in for acupuncture (which although approved in many regions, is still not as accurate as allopathy/medicine). Please go through my answer, and then you can decide what is best for your daughter.

The first and most important factor I would like to shed light on, is the presence of H.pylori in her investigation. Which investigation was this? Was this a H.pylori test? If so, the presence of H.pylori points towards the direction of gastritis (Type B or atrophic gastritis). For your reference, the symptoms of this are:
-Abdominal pain (in epigastric region)
-Nausea
-Abdominal fullness
-Vomiting
-Flatulence
-Malaise
-Fever (rarely)

If you feel this could be a possibility, please go about the following investigations to confirm the same: histological examination of a gastric biopsy

Once this is diagnosed, it can easily be treated, I request you to consider this.

Now giving some basic information on IBS, which your daughter was diagnosed to have. If she indeed has IBS, you need to understand that no matter what the treatment, IBS returns/recurs due to irritation provided by a few triggering factors (food and drinks). The reason why I feel it important to provide this information to you, is so that you could avoid including these in your daughter's diet. They are:
-Tea
-Coffee/caffeine
-Sugar containing drinks
-Carbonated drinks
-Popcorn
-Oily/fatty/fried food
-Chocolates
-Dairy products
-Alcohol
These are the most common triggering factors. They vary from person to person, and thus, if you notice an irritation from any other food products, it is best to avoid them as well.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
