If you cannot fall asleep easily and are getting agitated, it is essential to consult a psychiatrist. You could be suffering from depression.

Medications can be effective in getting you out of your current situation. In addition it will help to include exercise and regular sleep and food habits till the condition resolves.

Hi,
Thanks for using healthcare magic,

I have gone through your history.

It seems that You are having depression for which you should consult psychiatrist for detailed evaluation and management.

Doctor may rule out physical causes like thyroid dysfunction or vitamin b 12 deficiency.
Doctor may advise you to start anti depressant drugs which are not only sleeping pills but it should help you to lift your mood.
Meanwhile, you may go for psychotherapy, stress management, relaxation therapy like exercise or yoga or meditation for better control over stress.

Thanks.

Psychiatrist Dr. Anjana Rao Kavoor's  Response
Hi,

Insomnia can have many causes, in which case treating the underlying cause can resolve the insomnia. Only rarely it is primary requiring sleeping pills.

There are a few non pharmacological ways to treat insomnia. You may try it first before resorting to sleeping tablets.
1. Maintain regular hours of sleep and wake cycle.
2. If you are hungry, have a light snack before bedtime. Do not have tea, coffee, in the evenings. Do not use alcohol or smoke if unable to sleep.
3. Manitain a regular exercise regimen.
4. Do not use the bed for anything other than sleeping. E.g. watching tv, reading a book, eating, exercising, talk on the phone etc.
5. Do not take naps during the day.
6. Do not eat heavy before bedtime to help you sleep.

If you strictly follow it, this will help you atleast to some extent. Get an evaluation by a psychiatrist to find out the cause for your insomnia and get appropriate treatment.

Hope this helps,
Dr A Rao

Hello.....
Thanks for your query. I am unsure in your case why the psychiatrist was unsure of starting sedative medication. However, considering your other symptoms you would require a thorough assessment for depressive disorder. The treatment would include antidepressants like SSRIs and psychotherapy tecniques like CBT/ Cognitive behavioural therapy. Stress reduction and relaxation techniques can be learnt from a clinical psychologist. Wish you good health.
