Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a small hernia on my left side. It doesn't hurt and doesn't bulge out. Occasionally, I am aware of it because I can feel it, no pain just feel it. It happened last March. I think I did it doing side planks. I remember straining to hold the side plank position for a certain number of seconds. My doctor diagnosed it last Sept. and referred me to a surgeon who I met with once. I do plan to get it repaired but not yet as we are busy downsizing to sell our house and move. I started this exercise program. I am careful not to do any exercises which I know will pull directly on that area, and if I feel the hernia area I back off, but i'm wondering if I am setting myself up for making the hernia bigger. Can I continue to do the Live Strong workouts in this program?
I noted the history of doing exercises and finding a small hernia on left side, which does not hurt but you do not want to get it operated immediately as you have to sell house and move. I would advise you the following:
- stop any exercise or work that increases the intra - abdominal pressure as anything increasing the intra-abdominal pressure will enlarge the hernia irrespective of whatever care you take
Then get this operated as soon as possible. Do not allow it to get enlarged and wait for obstruction, incarceration or strangulation which is a dreaded complication. Take laxatives if you have constipation and avoid cough causing infection of the respiratory tract. Get the blood and urine tests to get corrected any deficiency and see for fitness for anesthesia and surgery.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. T Chandrakant
