Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is 12, running a fever since yesterday afternoon. Treating with Tylenol and Motrin. Fever between 101 and 102 before Motrin/Tylenol then reduces to 100.2 at the lowest. Has not lost appetite, eating like a horse. Should I take him into ER?
Hello, if your son has no other medical problems and is alert, breathing comfortably and not in distress, you can leave a message with your pediatrician or clinic. Generally, if a 12 year old has a fever greater than 101 for more than 48 hours, they may be developing complications of a virus or they may have a bacterial infection requiring antibiotics. If he has a rash, sore throat, wet cough, neck stiffness, changes in his coordination or balance, or other major symptoms, he should be seen soon. Many urgent care centers are open on weekends, if he needs medical care today.
