Noticing Pain In Foot And Swelling Due To Lack Of Arch Support

i am having a lot of foot pain when i walk, my ankle was swollen for a time, but has gone down, the doctor i want to told me i had no arch support, so told me to get some supports for my shoes, so i did, but weeks later, my foot began to hurt as i walk, and it only gets better when i am off of them. what is the problem, is it more than fallen arches?.
