Nursing Mother. Had Unprotected Sex. Took Nordette. Side Effects?

Hi! I am Thea, I gave birth last Aprl 5,2013 and I have'nt yet a menstrual period since I'm a nursing mom too,my husband and I had a unprotected sexual intercourse this June 29,2013. Immediately Im searched and found Nordette as an Emergency Contraception, I took 4pills on 9:40pm of June 30,2013 and another 4pills on this July 1, 2013 on 9:40am. Does taking Nordette will be effective for me since I'm a nursing mom and no menstrual period? What will be the side effects of taking nordette pills?

hi.. thanks for using HCM..
you have taken emergency contraceptive which contains levonorgesterol and ethynly estradiol..
since you are a lactating mother, this tablet should not be taken because the estradiol will cause lactation failure..
instead intrauterine contraceptive device can be used as both emergency contraceptive and later on also..
if it is introduced within 5 days of unprotected intercourse, it interferes with implantation and can be continued as contraception also..
see your gynaecologist for this..
all the very best..

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Because you are breast feeding especially if you are exclusively breast feeding, you may be protected against pregnancy.

This is especially likely if your periods have not yet returned.

Nordette is a common contraceptive and like all hormonal contraceptives the most noted side effects would be related to the potential to cause clotting. These side effects are only potential problems and do not necessarily occur.

You can consider the use of progesterone based contraception while you are breast feeding, it does not impact on breast milk production.

I hope this helps
