On Levothyroxin. Have Low Thyroid. Now Feeling A Lump On My Thyroid. Side Effect?

Thanks, I was wondering if taking Levothyroxin could cause the development of a growth on the thyroid? I have never had that until I was taking the thyroid medicine. My Dr put me on it because my thyroid was a little low I think, and later we checked my blood and my thyroid was fine. I asked if I could get off the medicine and she said to stay on it. Now I have a benign lump on my thyroid. Any connection???? I am afraid taking this medicine may have caused the growth. Thanks for your help...Kay Holker

Hi there,

Thanks for your query. I fully appreciate your concerns.

From the details provided, You are apparently suffering from Hypothyroidism, that is, inadequate production of Thyroid hormone. hence, Levothyroxin (thyroid hormone) was prescribed to make up for the deficiency.

Levothyroxin does not cause development of growth. It is just coincidental that it got unmasked after starting treatment.

The replacement therapy has to continue to maintain normal levels of the hormone in the blood. You have not mentioned the thyroid report.

The lump is nothing but a nodule which is commonly seen in hypothyroidism. There is no need to worry : consult your treating doctor who will advise FNAC (mini-biopsy) of the lump and probably its ultrasound to assess the nature of the lump. The condition is called Goitre.

Please revert back to me in case of further clarifications.

Regards,

Dr. Karanwal
