On Lisinopril, Crestor, Carvediol For Heart Problems. Advised Getting Kidneys Checked After Blood Test. Possible Side Effects Of Medicines?

Can any of thee heart medications cause a problem with the kidney:
Lisinopril, Crestor, Torsemide Amidiodarone or Carvediol? My husband has been on these medications and now all of a sudden his primary care physician due to a recent blood test has sent him to a kidney specialist to check his kidneys function. No One in his family has ever had any kidney or bladder problems. thank you so much for your help. Joyce Miller

Respected Ma'm
Thanks for your query to us.
Out of the 5 drugs, lisinpril can have direct relation with kidney functions in following manners.
1. Whenever lisinopril is started in a normal person, The creatinine levels are expected to rise by ~25% but this does not harm kidneys and is beneficial in long term.
2. Lisinopril should not be given to a person with both sided renal artery narrowing or stenosis. It will cause deterioration in renal function.
3. Lisinopril is currently not recommended for patient with baseline GFR of 2.5mg % unless under strict supervision.. It may result in acute renal failure / hyperkalemia.
Torsemide by virtue of decreasing plasma volume can cause increase in creatinine in conducive settings (esp in patients with heart failure and low kidney reserve).
Hope this helps.
Sincerely

Hello,

Thanks for posting on HCM,

Only two of those medications can lead to a kidney diseases: lisonpril and amiodarone.
Amiodarone in > 10% of patients that take it could have increased serum creatinine which is a protein that significantly increases in cases of kidney injury. So it is a nephrotoxic drug. But this does not necessarily mean that it is responsible for a permanent kidney damage. While taking amiodarone your doctor could monitor serum creatinine levels and see if they increase and if they do, it is indication to stop the medication.
Lisinopril is seen to lead to kidney diseases in 1-10% of patients taking it. It is strongly advised to use with caution if any signs of kidney impairment.
It is strongly advised to see a nephrologist or kidney specialist.

Hope this helps
